How to Grow Watermelon in Pot

Watermelon is very delicious to eat, especially in summer, since it can help you keep hydrated. This fruit contains a lot of high vitamins and nutrients, that’s why eating watermelon can make you get healthier. Planting this fruit is sometimes not easy since it has long vines and can take up space in the garden, and it can be worse if you have limited space in your garden. But, you don’t need to worry since you can plant watermelon in a pot and it requires a low maintenance.

Preparing the Plant and Pot or Container

The first thing that you need to prepare is the seeds of the watermelon. It is advised that you buy the seeds from the gardening store near your area. It is because the seeds will be able to adjust to the weather well. You can start by planting 3 to 4 seeds in a pot and choose the best seedling from the pot to be transferred to the container.

You also need to prepare the suitable pot or container for the watermelon. You might think that you can prepare any pot or container you have, but you need to consider the length of the root it has. Therefore you need to prepare a big and wide container with at least 2 feet deep. Also, you need to make sure that the pot or the container has holes to ensure the drainage and let the root breathe.

Start filling the container with the mixture of soil and fertilizer. The ideal pH of the soil is around 6 to 6.8.  Place the selected seedlings into the pot or the container and make sure you plant them 3 times deeper than its length.

Taking Care of the Watermelon

If you want your watermelon to grow well, you need to take care of it carefully. It is because planting them in a pot or container might allow the vines to grow out of control.

  • Trellis

The important thing that you need to consider when planting the watermelon in a pot or container is to add a trellis to support the vines. It is true that watermelon can grow bigger even in a pot or container. To prevent it to happen, the trellis is needed. Make the trellis at least 4 feet tall and train the vines to climb up the trellis.

  • Prune

Pruning is also necessary to keep your watermelon healthy. You need to keep the main vine only and trim other vines to prevent the watermelon grow excessively. Also, remove the damaged and diseased vines to prevent it to contaminate other vines.

  • Water

Watermelon needs a lot of water to grow and you need to make sure that the soil is always moist, but prevent it to get wet. You also need to make sure that the water is not clogged and can drain well to prevent the watermelon to get rotten. You can water the watermelon once in a day or twice a day when the weather starts to get warmer.
